Troy is a legendary city and center of the Trojan War. Today it is the name of an archaeological site in Turkey (Turkish Truva), the traditional location of Homeric Troy. The area was excavated by the the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in the 1870s. The archaeological site of Troy was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998. Today there is a Turkish town called Truva in the vicinity of the archaeological site, but this town has grown up recently to service the tourist trade. Sources, related links:
